Gallery: Kentung, Myanmar

Kentung is a small town in western Myanmar, not too far from the borders with Laos and Thailand. I arrived by bus from Chiang Mai in northern Thailand via the land border. The immigration process was pretty straightforward and didn’t take too long. We went into a small office on the street where we filled out a form and showed our passports. After that, we were on our way.

You could get away with skipping Kentung because there isn’t too much to do, however I still had a great experience here. We did a full day of trekking through the hills and rice paddies, where we visited three tribes. It’s wonderful to get away from tourist hot spots and meet local people. There were also some incredible views reaching all the way to China in the distance.

If you’re travelling from Laos or Thailand to Myanmar by bus and you want a place to stop to break up the journey, Kentung is a good place for this. It’s not too far from the borders and it has a (very small) airport so you can fly on to other destinations, such as Inle Lake, which is what I did.
