Gallery: Angkor, Cambodia

Angkor was the capital city of the Khmer Empire from around the 9th to 15th centuries. The ruins of the ancient city are surrounded by forests and farmland, and include more than 1,000 temples – the most famous being the magnificent Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat is one of the Top 3 sights for tourists, along with Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm. These temples really are incredible. My favourite was Ta Prohm, which is famous for being overgrown by the jungle that surrounds it. It’s a very dramatic and atmospheric place to explore.

The nearest city  to Angkor is Siem Reap, which is the capital of Cambodia. There is plenty to see and do in the city itself, including museums and markets, and lots of restaurants offering delicious local food. There is also a buzzing nightlife scene, particularly around the area known as “pub street”.
