Gallery: Khajuraho Group of Monuments

It’s hard to put into words the beauty of these temples. The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a group of Hindu and Jain temples in Madya Pradesh. They are one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India, and known in particular for sculptures depicting the Kama Sutra.

There are about 20 surviving temples out of the original 85.
They are made out of sandstone.
The stones were not attached to each other using mortar.
Incredibly, they slot together using very precise joints!
They are covered in intricate sculptures depicting important aspects of human life according to Hinduism.
Kama Sutra imagery makes up about 10 per cent of the sculptures.

TOP TIP: Avoid the hotter months of the year to visit these temples. There is very little shade so you stand a good chance of heat stroke in the summer months.
